Harry's Lumber Co. has been a family owned and operated business since 1940. Father and son, Harry and Jerome Rosenthal, opened their doors in 1940 to service the lumber needs of the Chicago community with the mantra "where quality and service still count.". The early years saw Leah Rosenthal, Jerry's wife, taking care of the accounting, while Harry and Jerome unloaded lumber by hand from the train tracks behind the yard.
Harrys Lumber is the Trex capital of the universe! We stock everything, offer same day/next day delivery, and we are ready to help with your new Trex Deck. We have the largest Trex inventory in Illinois. Come by and see our sample deck with different decking and railing combinations. Transcends has a virtually indestructible shell, unrivaled fade, stain, scratch and mold resistance, ultra-low maintenance and wood grain beauty.
Originally focused on commercial buildings, the trend is increasing its expansion to residential construction. The term "green" is often interchanged with "high-performance" or "healthy" because of the ability of the building to reduce its dependency on natural resources while providing a durable and healthy environment.

That is pretty interesting to read people's feelings on line nowadays. Contractor. Builder. Customer and much more to name the few. Deal with zillion stores throughout the Illinois and nationally, internationally. Customers- please get over yourself - stop whining like kids. Don't get too smart when you order or try to be the expert in it.

Go to big box store and ask for some assistance: how long you have to wait? What answer you will get? Ohh- I ahve to find it our for you- asking others or looking for online. walk the miles and still being confused where you going & what you need there. If you don't like it don't shop there. Are you best in what you do? Expert in your field? Pathetic views and approaches.

Where is that American spirit of getting things done and going extra mile- pleasant approach, smile on the faces, what the heck happenned to this country? Brainwashed too much? Wake up. because it could be too late - you might have robots serving you- then what? Help each other not being arrogant and Selfish. What example you leave to your kids? Adam

I took a 30 minute drive out to Harry's Lumber, only to find out the Lumber Yard is closed to the public due to COVID, despite the fact that their website (and Google) says they're open for business. I gave them a call standing outside their locked doors with my 74 yr old mother, only to be told -- phone orders only. 1.5 years into this pandemic and they're still locked up -- unbelievable! I'll be happy to take my $10,000 budget to another lumberyard who is capable of looking me in the eye as we make a transaction. Incompetence at best. Harry's Lumber, Where Service Doesn't Exist!

Terrible place to buy lumber. They give unrealistic labor and installation price to homeowners who are buying lumber from them. Destroying the business for the contractors.

Over priced example 2x6x16 is $35 vs $19 at homedepot. Rude customer service employee got "frustrated" I added to my order. Lumber is slid under the gate.

I'm with a small landscape design + build company in Chicago and have been working with Harry's Lumber for a little over a year. The team is extremely knowledgable, quick with their responses and very fair with pricing. I cannot recommend them enough!

Not run very effectively and not very helpful. Handle the Covid 19 like idiots. Home Depot and menards was open but made it miserable to use the lumber yard out of necessity again speaks to management and why they be shut down in another couple years.

Harry's Lumber is the best! I'm in the midst of a gut rehab and can't tell you how many times I've placed urgent or emergency wood orders. They have turned stuff around same day or early next morning countless times. When I had a piece of wood that was damaged, they sent someone to pick it up and replace within hours. I can not recommend them enough!

Have a lot of wood in stock, Trex products, the works. Also locally owned. I ended up here after Home Depot cracked a good portion of my order (Trex Select composite decking) and they were very nice and just down the road. They offer next day delivery for product they don't immediately have, which is amazing. Delivery cost was very reasonable- BUT- I was a resident doing a self-project and the driver didn't really have a great way for me to get the lumber into my garage.

Not sure how it could be easier, but it wasn't real terrific manually loading into my garage. Unfortunately, one of the Trex boards was also damaged, but Harry's was a class act and brought a new one out within an hour of me going to their store and asking. I also noticed that some of the boards I got were not usable- bowed/twisted/warp for my project, but I realize it's almost impossible to get 100% decent/good lumber. I ended up replacing it and tossing the extra 4x4 as it was just too much work to bring it back and replacing it. I'd definitely do business with them again.

We had a rush order and they jumped through hoops for us to get it out. Then our customer messed up and we had to cancel. They were very accommodating and we will definitely come back to them for any lumber needs. Highly recommend them!

Harry's Lumber went out of there way to help me find a discontinued baseboard. It's hard to find service like that today. Berry appreciative of the help. Thank you!

Saved hundreds of dollars on a home project and received excellent service. Exactly what a local small business should be: helpful, informal, friendly. And the banter between the staff is very entertaining.

Not going back ever again. Just wanted a new lock for my door, and the first gentlemen I talked to on the phone said they could order it. When I went in to make the order, a different gentlemen told me they didn't carry it, and it would be too expensive to order, so try ACE down the street. ACE came through, but my point of ordering it was that I was trying to match it as close as possible to the lock that broke, which I bought from Harry's 15 years ago!

I didn't want an on-the-shelf model, but it was obvious that he really didn't want to be bothered with this order. It's really too bad because I think they are experts at what they do, but since when does any business feel secure in turning away a good paying customer?!

Greatest selection of cedar and many other wood products for siding and decks. Great front office folks who will work with the average DIYer and not make you feel like an idiot. Yard team is extremely helpful. They all stayed late one Saturday to help me load a last minute purchase. I drive 45 minutes to get there and it's worth it.

Very helpful and great selection especially for deck materials. Nobody has what they have in stock for all the Trex decking and accessories. Their delivery guys are awesome and truly cater to customer needs. They may not be the cheapest but these guys are well worth the money!

Moved a new queen bed into my apt and my mother thought bed slat would be give additional support (obviously). After a day of moving up and down three flights of stairs, no elevator, the thought of going to the closest Home Depot or Menards made me want to vomit. Thankfully my mom noticed Harry's lumber as I live just a couple block from their store. Duh.

They were able to take my measurements, offer me two best options of wood, cut it and send me on my way in less than 15 minutes. They even gave me a "clear" piece. (Lumber shop talk). Won't forget about this place ever again.

I tried finding discontinued composite decking by calling the manufacturer. They were not bale to help find decking but when I called Harry's, Aaron was more than willing to help me locate the decking. He was able to find the decking and had it delivered to my condo. in Chicago. Aaron always called when he said he would and his driver showed up on time.

My contractor asked me to get the wrong decking so I had to call Aaron back and get the right product. In less that 3 hours, he had the same driver back out to my condo. with the right product. I had to pay a restocking fee, but the contractor will pay for it since it was his mistake. The customer service and professionalism was something that I rarely experience these days. Thanks Aaron. You are a class act! I highly recommend Harry's.

Harry's Lumber does not want new customers; especially those that want to look at the quality of their wood selection. I'll explain. I have some big projects coming up for the rooms in my house and I knew I would be needing some good wood trim and other wood supply. I found Harry's by google maps and went there early last Saturday. As I entered the building I begin to look around.

There were just 4 workers with coffee talking behind the counter. I didn't see any wood trim, just products in plastic you would see at any hardware or big box store. Immediately, someone asked what I was looking for. I explained I was looking to see their wood selection because I had many projects coming up and I wanted to see what they had.

He asked what specifically I was looking for. There wasn't any one piece I needed and told him this. Again I asked to see their selection as it was apparent that there was not any wood selection on display. The guy, with coffee in hand, showed me the trim cut pieces on the wall. I told him I was a hands on person and wanted to see the wood selection myself.

He said he would be happy to show me their selection but first wanted to see what I was looking for specifically. Again I wasn't looking for any piece in particular. The room became quite as we discussed this back and forth. After a couple of times of this back and forth, it seemed to me that he really didn't want to show me any wood selection.

At this point a guy spoke up, I am guessing the owner by the way everyone differed to him, he said that I was NOT the type of customer they wanted and that I should leave. I was shocked. It seems that Harry's Lumber has plenty of customers willing to accept whatever quality of lumber Harry's gave them. I began to leave and told him that I would be telling everyone I knew about their preference about new customers; especially ones that want to review and select the quality of wood they would be buying.

I have been a customer at Harry's for at least 15 years, maybe 20. I love the joint. I have never had a problem with arrogance as some stated. Sometime people have an attitude and it is reflected back. I haven't been to the 'other' places in years, and I thank my lucky stars for that, since they stink.

I am really easy to please. That is why I love harry's. I work at Menards, so I know where to get the best service and stock. Harry's is by far the best lumber yard in the chicago area. Harry's is one of the last Lumber yards left in the North side oif Chgo. WE have to support these jewels of Lumber in Chgo. If You need 2x4's go to the big boxes.

If You want the best cuts of wood or something different. Go to Harry's lumber. Harry's may cost You more than the big box stores. If that is the only reason You whine about Harry's, Then too bad. If there was no competiton the prices at the big box stores would alot higher. I go to Harry's to help them and get better grades of wood than most.

I've been going to Harry's on and off for just a year or two. While I used to not think so highly of the outdoor staff, my last couple visits totally put me in my place. Perhaps my last review was blindly based on someone having a bad day in conjunction to me having a bad day myself. The front desk staff here has always been friendly and knowledgeable of their product.

Not only has their customer service been exceptional in person, but they have also been a pleasure to deal with on the phone dozens of times. Their selection is top notch, and for the price, you really can't find anything better. They may be a minuscule fraction higher in price than your local "big box store", but their selection is at least 300% better in quality and I'm not exaggerating. I've only got a few years of experience under my belt with Harry's, but I hope to utilize their products and services for years to come.

I was browsing Yelp for vinyl siding and happened to see Harry's Lumber here. I've lived less than one mile from Harry's for the past 10 years. I've spent upwards of $30k on building materials during that time. I NEVER go to Harry's unless I'm totally desperate for something in a hurry. Harry's prices are ridiculously high. I't's incomprehensible they can stay in business.

I selected this place due to the great reviews here - what a disappointment! I asked for the type and size of the wood I wanted, and almost fell over at the price. But I was in a hurry and had no back up place and needed to finish this project. and was told if it was cut you couldn't return it so check the wood before they cut- went to the back and the guy tells me pull my car around, and then the wood is cut by the time I got back. 2 pieces suppose to be the same size are 1/2-1inch different length.

The cedar warped within days and was splitting when I put screws in. It also seemed to be finished on one side - I only needed raw wood so I think without me specifying - he just gave me the most expensive type that met the measurement. I will never ever go there again - not even for a dowel. I think they deliberately gave me the wrong type for whatever reason.

I have some suspicions on what was going on - but I don't know for sure so won't say - but they gave me something I didn't ask for, that cost more than it needed to and is not working that well for the project - on that basis alone - I give them a 1 star.

I came here to get a piece of replacement cedar siding for my house, since not every place has wood siding. My roofer recommended this place and he was right. I have never been to a real lumber yard, just the big Home Depot/Menard's variety, which usually involves walking around a lot in a spacious warehouse looking for someone not driving a forklift.

Or when you pick up the materials, you need a ticket and the transaction resembles a border crossing between US and Mexico. I needed just one thing and I was in and out in 5 minutes or less. I came to the front desk, which was staffed by 2 people, presented my sample of rotten siding. The guy measured the piece and selected the correct thickness of cedar, wrote it down on a purchase receipt.

I paid for it and went across the lot to a neighboring building where maybe 5 or 6 people were working. They greeted me immediately, got me the siding piece I needed and cut it to length, no hassles. It's not a very big lot by Harry's but I found street parking directly in front. This stretch of Northwest Highway is rather quiet, so I don't think it's a major problem. My overall impression of how this place works makes me want to avoid going back to the big box stores for lumber or building materials.

After reading the other two reviews for this business I gave Harry's lumber one more star. I have done business with Harry's lumber for about 15 years. I have bought material for some contracting and personal projects. I agree that it is the best lumber yard for the lumber and the prices. But I have a problem with arrogant and pompous owners of service businesses, and that is what a lumber yard is supposed to be.

There is a guy in there with glasses that is a good egg, but dealing with Harry or his son-in-law is exhausting. I recently built a deck for my father-in-law for Father's Day and I never had installed Trex before, which I must say I will always use from now on. But getting past these two who are so full of themselves was tough. I am a carpenter and usually know what I need, but when it came to Trex i was a bit confused and ended up not getting exactly what I needed.

I made it work. I just wish they would appreciate their business a little more. My father-in-law asked me why I go there and I had to admit that they have the best product for the dollar of anywhere in the Chicago area. Oh by the way, Harry didn't mind mentioning that he was the largest Trex dealer in Illinois.

One of the best lumberyards I have ever done business with in the Chicagoland area. The staff is very good and helpful. They will do everything they can to make sure you get the proper materials for your project, now matter how big or small it is. The lumber they stock is significantly better than the stuff available at any of the big box home centers.
